Fortified planning

With an increase of neoliberalism we are getting more and more into the trap of segregation. Inequality, slums, “fragmented neighborhood fascisms”. Our planning encourage us to do so. By fighting against borders and promoting ‘liberal’ openness we still are competing in the market driven economy that is not intended to be community oriented. What is the role of an architect on that market?

Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek during the second day of Future Architecture conference stated that architects and architecture are primary indicators and analysts of social problems and relations. Can architecture be a medium and I think yes. But I am curious how far it can go. Now we are witnessing very interesting changes in USA history, but architecture is not yet reacting. And how can it? I am very curious to hear your answers.

Walls vs non:

Inability to solve the conflict creating walls around us on different level. From the interpersonal relationships to the city scale with fences to the interstate with more heavy visible barriers, etc. I see that we are slipping into the Medieval wall-cities planning.

Another question for me if the grid is one of those already created borders?
We take this Greek invention for granted - a line with no thickness (ref. a border).

“Grid”—that latticework that divvies America’s fields, forests, and towns into perfect square-mile sections—was Thomas Jefferson’s brainchild for apportioning Western territories acquired after the Revolutionary War.

Of course there is another scenario - non conflict state.

"I had attained innocence, in an absolute and non-conflictual state, I no longer had any plan, nor any objective, and my individuality dissolved into an indefinite series of days; I was happy." (Michel Houellebecq).

Or just non-state.
