The Domino Effect: Can it go both ways?

“It does not take many incidents of violence on a city street, or in a city district to make people fear the streets…And as they fear them, they use them less, which makes the streets still more unsafe.”

The article talked about the this domino effect in which something happens making people start to fear being outside causing the streets to be abandon and become even more dangerous. It is a very bad progression in the street loses all life and for the residents it becomes simply making it from one point to the next in the city rather then they path getting there. There is no spontaneous meetings where people run into each other and talk after not seeing each other in a while. There randomly coming across some kind of event on the street that you didn’t know was occurring. There are none of these fun surprises that can happen when just walking the streets or just the joy of walking around the city.

However, is there a way to reverse this effect in which good things start happening on the streets, people start to feel safe and start to inhabit them again? Can a few occurrences of events or the temporary presence of police make the residence feel safe again to reclaim the street.

  1. I think the solution is reviving the street with activities, like Jane Jacobs said. When people feel it is a community space sharing with others, they will regard this space as their home and start to protect their community.
