Everyday Urbanism: Life of the City_Blogg Entry 5

Architects outside of Architecture- Dissolving the clear image of program

Electricity usage markings on the road in Tidy street
Everyday urbanism or architecture is the result of the "in between" spaces. The Everyday living of the citizen, the daily activities that become routine in life. The commuting to work or school, grocery shopping, socializing; it is what happens in between the confines of a building. The above picture is of a graph of daily electric usage for the immediate surrounding area. This is interesting when thinking about taking a daily activity like biking or walking down the street and portraying information that could help the community better their life as well as the environment. Taking something like a basic road and transforming it into something that enhances the quality of life.

Broom Fence

These two examples above are interesting in that they depict different ways to transform a simple space by adding things like color or green space. The colorful brooms that were placed on the fence in the above picture provide privacy for the home owner but also begins to create something interesting for the public eye, beginning to blur the line of public and private everyday urbanism.

Starbucks is an interesting case because it shows consumerism but people based consumerism. They have down countless research on providing not just a product that their consumers will enjoy but a space in which they would want to spend their time and money in. Imagine if more architects did the countless studies in which Starbucks did but then also used creative problem solving to not just give the costumer what they want but actually develops something new for them.
