Only as Good as What You Know
“they don’t engage those topics as experts on economics or
civic politics, but, rather as experts on design and how design may affect
economics or politics. They engage these other fields as experts on design’s relationship
to those other disciplines, rather than as critics.”
A profession of helpers, not judges.
Sometimes how we discuss our projects, we come across as
knowing better. I think it comes from a
desire for a better world, to improve the lives of our fellow man (or woman or
child or dog or family or teacher). We see problems and like solutions. This is
a great way to see the world, but sometimes we need to a reminder that we aren’t
experts on everything. At least, that might be what a projective architecture might
say. We should always question, but it’s ok if the existing answer is the
correct answer.
Architecture is a bridge between the profession and the
world. It is good and right that the knowledge of the client or user can impact
the architect’s design. This relationship with the user allows us to show that
they have value. A value all on their own, and not just as a tool for us to
create cool buildings because they are cool.
