The Guitarist vs The Drummer
From the conversations from class and the lastest reading, I believe
I have finally understood the relationship between Eisenman and Koolhaas. The article
and the class discussion listed many different fundamental techniques of the way
that both architects view their work and the manner in which their work is
viewed. I like to think of these two individuals as different musicians.
Koolhaas, to me, is a member of a grand orchestra with a unique musical instrument
such as a guitar. While not usually thought of a classical addition to an
orchestra, it blends in with the other members of the assembled orchestra and
contributes to the sounds of the entire body of music. Thus the contextual relationship that Koolhaas makes with his works is a strong one. Eisenman
on the other hand is like a steel drum player. Their music is unique unto itself
and the person is almost always dressing in bright colors to say “look at me”.
Eisenman doesn’t seem to care about the contextual statement that his work makes to
the surrounding buildings, often giving the impression that his work is unique
for the sake of being unique. Simply Eisenman likes to bang his own drum and
Koolhaas rather would be a part of a large company of musicians.
