Why separate the professions?
"While a collaborative mode of working
among various areas of design expertise is mandatory in
thinking about the contemporary and future city, the transdisciplinary
approach of ecological urbanism gives designers
a potentially more fertile means of addressing the challenges
facing the urban environment."
This quote is very interesting to me because, during our Fluid Campus semester in Barcelona, our professor Miguel always told us that in the US, people are either urban planners, landscape architects or architects. In Spain he said they did all of it as architects.
I think it's crucial for these professions, who are inherently working towards the same goals, to work as one. Because the landscape defines the architecture which impacts or defines the city.
How can you understand the role or impact of a building on the built environment, on socio-political relations or on the environment etc.. if you do not understand how the city, works?
The city is an ecosystem, everything inside it is interconnected.
1. Sensibilities and Practices to urban development
2. Multi-Scalar Design Strategy
3. Sustainability & Connectivity
4. Imagination
5. Locality
6. Flexibility
7. Political & Politics
8. Disagreement
All of these points are crucial in creating a city that can grow and adapt all while being interconnected with all the components of its environment.
"The city, for all its
importance, can no longer be thought of only as a physical
artifact; instead, we must be aware of the dynamic relationships,
both visible and invisible, that exist among the various
domains of a larger terrain of urban as well as rural ecologies."
I think that we are not there yet with building and designing towards Ecological urbanism but we are taking steps in the right direction with our design intensions and understanding the relationship of the natural and built environment to impact the social.

From this weeks reading we see the discussion on how aspects of todays urbanism / suburbia transformations can attribute to ecological urbanism. Of course initially these words are attributed to many negatives on the environment. But with the discussion of reuse of spaces in this aspect they pull in other roles in hopes to work together to in ways reverse or improve the impacts on ecology. Is it fully effective , no. Not yet like you say for other things. But maybe in time they will get it together!
ReplyDeleteI think this is true, architects can be thought of and practice architecture in a multitude of ways. I think of the quality of work there compared to here and it seems like architects here can get to focused on one component or only making sure the project meets budget and lose sight of the big picture.
