Form + Function
In Peter Eisenman: 'Post-Funcionalism' in Oppositions, it touches on how the rise of industrialization, fundamentally disrupts the concern for expression of an ideal type and the concern for programmatic statement. It is explained that architecture became a social or programmatic art and as the functions became more complex, the pure type-form eroded. I find it interesting how this shift in balance over the years has now led architects today to believe that form follows function. In the Doppler effect, it also mentions the social, intellectual, and visual culture that architecture is. The idea of hot representation versus cool performance is also something one could argue could be opinionated and respond to the user only and not architecture as a whole. In all three readings and in Bjarke Ingels: Lecture, they critique and challenge the developing theoretical ideas of architecture over the years and how it is evolving into the future. Sustainability has been suffering over the years as an overarching theme in architecture, but Ingels explains how sustainability doesn’t need to be this painful aspect in our field, but a functional and pleasing place for citizen’s that gives back to our earth and environment. I believe it is up to us as aspiring architects to always put the client first, but we must find ways to develop our profession and not get stuck within a paradigm that is constantly changing.
The image shows Eisenman’s phase as the diagrams of interiority which found internal rules and mechanisms for the discipline without exterior contact of the world.
