Should architecture be able to stand on its own and be true to form as Peter Eisenman says or should it respond to the issues society faces on a daily basis. Eisenman believed that architecture should avoid being humanistic and focus on aesthetics over functionality.

I do not agree with Eisenman’s post-functionalist approach. I believe that the purpose of architecture is and should always be to provide humans a place to rest and be safe from the elements. The post-functionalist approach by Peter Eisenman completely removes the human element out of the equation. Architecture has the opportunity to address a wide range of needs such as, cultural, environmental, economic and health just to list a few. Ignoring these would be a disservice to society.

  1. I totally agree! I think especially today, when we know that resources are finite, we have a responsibility to use those resources wisely. It's interesting that Eisenman believed that architecture was separate from the social issues of the time but this alone shows that he was from a time before mainstream sustainability.
