Post-Functionalism

Peter Eisenman's view on architecture as a whole feels irresponsible. Architecture is about humanism, how a person experiences and uses a space. If architecture does not have a function it is no different than a sculpture or painting. A piece of art can be enjoyed and observed but not used and experienced. Designing with some sense of practicality, and for a user is why architects are commissioned. A counter question to Post-Functionalism is what makes a building successful in architecture? The beauty of the design often covers the major issues such as the building isn't really good at what it is intended for.

I  definitely understand abstract art is popular so why not apply it to a building?  I believe the responsibility as an architect is to design through a blend of form and function. You identify a problem or need and address it through design. A skilled architect finds beauty in how they solve through design, not just adding a three dimensional grid for no reason besides gaining clout.

  1. I totally agree with the social responsibility of the architectural profession, but I think the significance of the "experimental" architecture be realized in real life is trying to push the boundary of what architecture can do besides achieve the basic needs for a particular structure.
If we only care about the needs of society, I don't think that is enough to separate human from animal, but I am definitely glad that Eisenman did not get to built all the building that he wanted to build. Among all his works I feel like the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin is the one I like the most. It does not serve any function, but its presence speaks in a way that does prove that architecture can go beyond the "function".

  2. I agree. This architecture sucks. I hate it.. but I also love it.

Maybe defining art is whats most important. In architecture, it is sometimes barely defined because things like form and function are priority. If art is the priority, it seems that we must interact and put our function and form into it. We assume buildings serve us because we need shelter, but in this type of architecture, that lends itself to thought about art, assumes that art as a subject comes first then the function.
