How well do you know your neighbors
The social dynamic between the
city and the suburbs are different. They each have their unique typology. In
the city people mainly live in apartments in which one shares a wall with their
neighbor. There is this sense that someone is always there However, it also
comes with the trade-off of to a lack of privacy as well as the actions of
others that can’t be controlled. One can sometimes learn more than they wish
about their neighbor this way. Though most people tend to follow general curtesy
rules, there are times that even if one wants to sleep but you neighbor decides
to play music really loud then that is something one need to deal with. Though
the sound of the neighboring apartment can at times be heard that doesn’t mean one
knows them. A majority of people that live in apartments don’t really know
their neighbors but only interact as they pass by each other and say hi. I know
this stands true for myself.
What is the social dynamic in
the suburbs? The suburbs are this fairly unique phenomenon in which there is a
more physical detachment of the living spaces. Rather than sharing walls they
share neighboring property on a street. This creates a buffer in which what
happens in one’s house is not known to their neighbors. Though there is this separation
there usually tends to be a greater sense of community that also comes from it.
People tend to interact with their neighbors more and look out for each other. Coming
from my own experiences the children would play outside in the street together,
unifying the parents together. Neighbors get to know each other and start
interacting more; they have block parties, gatherings for most holidays, and
informal gatherings outside. These events can allow immediate neighbors to the
whole neighborhood to know each other. But this lead to the question of whether
it is fake or not.
