B ignes S is the last bastion of architecture
"BIGNESS
is the last bastion of architecture".
The idea put
forth by Koolhaas of holds some truth, but will not be the future of
architecture because of the void on the most basic level, the person. When a
building, program, and/or population moves to a state of “bigness”, this
transition up in scale changes the way it relates to other scales, generally causing
congestion. The solution being “bigness”, according to Koolhaas, but in no way
addresses the human’s presence in space, and actually removes the person from
the context, whether horizontal or vertical in nature.
I agree. It seems as though the common solution is more big buildings. But the very nature of that dissolves the importance of the occupant. Architecture is for people and should address their needs appropriately. Solving big problems with bigger buildings seems to be the easiest solution, not the smartest one. Perhaps Koolhaas is ignoring the power of subtlety. Some of the biggest problems have been solved with small (in footprint) solutions that cast a wide net. These are the smartest ones. For example, internet solved our needs to rapidly communicate with others.
