Junkspace or Needed Space
Why is it that we are all so concerned about this so called “junkspace?” I understand, why its bad, but is it really that bad? Sure, it’s unappealing, but would it be so popular today if it wasn’t needed. Technology has made it cheaper and more efficient to build these comfortable common spaces that are often used.
Granted some junkspace doesn’t provide connections to nature or authentic experiences, but if we were so concerned with being or connecting to nature or these experiences, we would seek these experiences outside of these junkspaces. For example, I wouldn’t go to Walmart to interact with people, I prefer to not interact with anyone; I go to pick up things that I need and then I leave. If I wanted to go to a place to be social it probably wouldn’t be at a Walmart.
Junkspace, whether we agree or not, is used often and for the most part is integrated into our society. I don’t think something that was so unnecessary would be so common today. Junkspace does the job and until we can figure a better way of building these spaces I don’t see them going away anytime soon. I’m not saying it’ll never be done, but until then, I say we kick back and appreciate the convenience junkspace provides.
