Contagious “Projective” Architecture and the Diagram
Architecture of the current day has been surrounded by the diagram.
Stemming from the question most architects and architecture students think
about; how can we best explain this project? Or, if we can’t verbally explain
the project, how can we explain it in an image? Well, that’s where the diagram has
come into play, and maybe a little too much.
It appears at times the diagram that is intended to explain
the project inevitably becomes the project, literally and metaphorically. The
reason being the attention and devotion that is put into explaining the idea of
a project, while also the attention it receives.
We all strive to have diagrams as cool and explanatory as BIGs,
attempting to imitate the aesthetics of their images. The successful tenure of
their diagrams has spread nearly everywhere in the world, becoming the
precedent of the project explanation.
Its true that diagrams have a way of communicating sometimes quite complex ideas in a very simple way. And don't get me wrong, I love a good diagram. However, I am critical of Architecture that exists as a literal diagram. To me, it seems a "watered down" way to design that does not acknowledge the full complexities of the problems architects design for in todays society.
