Mathematics of the Ideal House

The idea that an open-floor concept accompanies every house, especially those that are newly built, has become a requirement on every persons ‘dream house list’. It is a trend that has become a prerequisite to owning any house in modern America. These future homeowners are hardly architects, but it shows the evolution of architecture in the way that it has evolved from Palladio to Le Corbusier and beyond.

Programmatic elements naturally bleed into one another, with no hard line between the purpose of said program spaces. These spaces are now fluid, easily transformed, and the original function of the space is no longer transparent even if the surrounding materials are. This evolution could be attributed to the advancement of building technology and knowledge from over the years. However, like open-floor concept houses, the ensuing results are what keeps the trend around; making the trend an evolution of form and function.

  1. I completely agree that the idea of "open floor" homes has become part of the wishlist of any new homeowner, even if they only sort of know what they're getting into. I wonder how much shows like House Hunters have influenced this idea?

  2. It is interesting that the "open floor plan" has become something that is desired by many. Often people don't know why they think the way they do about what they want, but much of it is the influence of designers and architects that tried ideas that were (or were not) successful before them.
