Learn From the Junk Space and Enjoy It

The very first Junk space comes from people's daily life. It is not designed by any designer. Because it is junk but also complex.
There is a lot of examples that how the junk space happened in the city.  The overall premise is junk space is most happen in the city. That means people cause the activity. Poor people were pushed out from the center of the city. But they still need the space to continue the life that needs the same function happened in the center of the city. That why the junk is so huge but at the same time, it is plentiful.
Like the Kowloon Walled City. It is a huge junk. But it is more like a city. Everything can be found in this junk space. People do not need to go out of the building, they can go through their whole life in the junk. But the bad side is they have to leave in this junk.
From the designer point. Architects try to rebuild the junk space, which has all activities in the space, people do not go out of the building. But is need more comfort space. If it can be designed on purpose that not only put the space together, like a typical mall. The junk space will more popular
in the city.

  1. Yibo, you make a good point that junkspace forms from an organic process such as the progress of density in a building which can spark ideas for design. What I like about this is that the natural process that creates the junkspace develops an identity to that particular space.

  2. The "Junkspace" you speak of is most often found in metropolises. I believe that the amount of congestion contributes to the junk that permeates the interworkings of the city. How people move around a city tends to be more deliberate and planned which then allows the junk to prevail in areas that are not noticed or inhabited. This also happens within structures, as people tend to take the same paths and seldom occupy spaces that are out of the ordinary or out of the way.
