cul-de-sacs

I think I really like suburbs. Growing up I was always jealous of my classmates who lived in neighborhoods with like houses. They could knock on a friends door and have someone to play catch with. Living in a more rural area and on land made hanging out with friends (before driving) a real ordeal. They seemed to have the best of both worlds. (at least my worlds) They had  enough land to ride dirt bikes and play catch, but they were in a safe community where everyone knew everyone. I was especially jealous of my friends in cul-de-sacs and a basketball goal. These suburbs become the center hub of the residents day to day. They become their own cities. Look at all the "suburbs" of Atlanta. Each of them are becoming their own destinations. Generally, people want to be with people. If being with the most people they want to be around, a safe environment, and affordability means suburbs then I think its a no-brainer for them.

  1. I like your comment : "Generally, people want to be with people" - it's true and made me think about a lot of other topics brought up in class, such as the sidewalks discussion, and how it is, indeed true and can be confirmed by several architectural arguments (like suburbs), not just sidewalks.

  2. I agree - growing up I was really jealous of friends who lived in neighborhoods like these. Mostly because they had a ton of kids my age. I do think to see how my friend who lived in those type of places played out (mostly socially). Most of those friends are married and living back in those suburbs. Those who didn't grow up in that type of neighborhood are all over the US living in cities, out of vans, biking across the country etc. Not sure if these two things are directly related or not but it is interesting.

  3. I was always a little jealous of the suburbs and the community they fostered. While there definitely is a dark side to the homogeneity and stratified communities that the suburbs foster, I think as a kid it would be one of the best places to grow up.
