The Burbs

 

“The larger, denser, and more urban the redevelopment, the greater the ability of its designers to change the existing development pattern”. This statement quoted from Ellen Dunham-Jones, perfectly defines what needs to happen with the suburbs. I appreciate the enthusiasm and hope for the suburbs as a reimagining or redefining them, rather than totally just disregarding them. There is a reason why so many leave the city to live a life in the “burbs”, and I think that is okay. As designers, we need to accept this and then think of ways to make the suburbs both desirable for people as well as for the planet. There is hope for the suburbs in this sense and I truly believe this all starts with an open mind. I am excited to see this as I enter the professional world, and hope I can be a part of this new definition of the suburbs.
