Is the Time of Suburbia Over or Just Beginning?
Suburbia was created because of events that met the right criteria. One might ask are those criteria still being met in today's housing market or is there a new cycle that is about to begin. Did the concept of suburbia only exist because of WWII veterans and baby boomers? What will the millennials and gen z people do? As a part of the millennials I myself feel that suburbia is not right for me and the path that I want to take. If you just use me as an example of a generation then all millennials will not go to suburban life. This we know is not true. One person does not determine a generation. So what does determine the future of suburbia?
I think suburbia will be challenged by environmental groups and younger generations that grew up within the suburbs. The environmental people will look at suburbia as a barrier to a healthy environment and a way that people are ruining our forests and ecosystems. The younger generations that grew up in suburbs might not want to or want to return to the suburbs. That might be more determined by their experience there and if they can find the life they want within it.
Looking for a job can make a difference for where you live. Because a suburb is not a community and just a bunch of similar looking houses there are not a lot of jobs within a certain vicinity. This brings up the idea that for suburbs to continue to exist they must evolve to include more community pieces that keep people within the area. This brings into the idea of mixing commercial and residential areas into one location. There are examples of this. Commercial on the bottom levels and residential above or different buildings side by side. This changes the image of what a suburb even is. It sounds more inclusive and more of a community. It sounds like it would be less of a small town feel. Sounds like a place I could see myself going at some point later in life.
I agree with what you are saying. Maybe suburbs are not ending but actually evolving. By stealing characteristics of the city we are creating a new space that will need to be coined with a different word.
