Flat Earthers and Climate Control
If the Earth was a sphere, all the water would run to the
lowest point. With this point made this proves the Earth is flat and we can
design flat site design architecture. Obviously these claims are not realistic.
Realistically we as architects have a choice in design to have a more critical
role in the environmental sustainability of our planet.
“At the same time, in
very few decades the field of architectural sustainability has gone from being
a proclamation originally rooted in the post-hippy context, with
individualistic and romantic manifestations – often inspired by Buckminster
Fuller, crossed with different thinkers – to becoming a logotype headed by
large engineering companies and some architects who originally encouraged hi-tech
architecture.” (p.1) Quote from Inaki Abalos’s Aesthetics and Sustainability:
Alternatives.
Abalo later in the reading talks about using air as a
construction tool for designing for the environment and sustainability. I find
this idea of designing with and for the invisible a beautiful concept. This
lead me into the Phillipe Rahm reading where he also talks about designing for
the invisible such as air, sound, and climate. The challenge I found in these
readings were how can we design for the invisible while still creating
attractive and engaging architecture.
What is invisible? Sound, Emotion, the Super Natural (potentially), Air, Temperature, and Time.
If you design for the visible, the invisible will take care of itself.
