Isn't this obvious?
This week’s topic was very relevant to the current issues society is facing. Since the tragic passing of George Floyd there has been a real awakening and re-focusing on civil rights amongst all colors, religions, and sexual orientations. This week’s topic “New spaces of social justice” touches on how architects can do their part in balancing the scales of power.
Something that struck me was a point made by one of the professors of the rural studio. In architecture school students are taught how to design these amazingly beautiful theoretical buildings that are in reality a once in a lifetime opportunity for most architects. Why are we not being taught how to design for the rest of the 99% of the world who could actually benefit from our knowledge? As architects we are taught how to be problem solvers. How can we effectively and beautifully solve a problem with the resources at hand? We as a profession should be switching our focus to the communities who could best utilize these talents and skills. Simple cost effective construction prototypes that could be adapted for a wide range of communities should be an undertaking that every firm strives to achieve.
