Architecture and the Community
Architecture is a powerful tool for expressing political messages and creating a sense of identity. It can be used to create a sense of belonging and to shape the way people interact with their environment. As such, it is essential to consider architecture from a political stance as it can create a more equitable society.
Along with that, architects should be more involved in giving back to the communities they build in. They should be able to express political messages in a more subtle way by expressing a particular ideology or creating a sense of identity. When architects get involved in the communities, they are showing a place of belonging and acceptance towards the needs of the area. Charleston is a great example of this, as the local architects are responsible for keeping the historical state of the area while also addressing the community's needs. When architects from outside the state develop the area, they should work with a local architect to maintain its identity.
This is something that I look for when searching for jobs because architects can have a strong influence on what they build. I like to design with a purpose, and understanding the area can go a long way when designing a building.
Designing with purpose, I agree, can go a long way when designing. It allows us to use our passion to promote change and power through when it becomes difficult to do. Designing for a community is no easy feat, and quite honestly, not seen enough in the real profession. Yes, money makes the world go around, but what you do in this life to help those in need or to serve a greater cause will impact those for generations to come.
ReplyDeleteAgreed that outside architects should work with local architects but they should take it a step further and engage with the locals of the areas as well not just other architects
