"Here, There and North of Nowhere"
“It is here, grounded in its own sense and identity, it is out there traversing the global networks and it is definitely north of nowhere”. - Jeremy Till
In Jeremy’s writing, he states that
the phrase “Here, There, and North of Nowhere” is a challenge to architects to
open up their radar to a wider set of issue Ariadne’s thread through
the urban register with all its social, political, connotations. He goes on to say only then can we possibly
invoke the word ‘critical’ that Frampton introduces but never fulfils. I think this everchanging landscape that
current urbanism is is crucial to understanding the future of public space. Ultimately,
I think Till is urging us to recognize the diversity and fluidity of urban
spaces in order for us as architects to create more livable and equitable
cities for future inhabitants. New approaches that adapt to the change in
nature (social and political).
Autumn, I found the reading by Till very thought-provoking as well. I agree with him, that as architects, there is no absolute/right answer so hence we have to consider complexities at different levels. We have to be willing to adapt to the ever-changing context we find ourselves in - - almost like walking a tightrope walk to balance everything to generate richer more meaningful spaces for the users.
