Eye Sore or Inspiring?
Too many times we as architects often get too caught up in the extravagant architecture that is shown on Arch Daily and Dezeen and forget to look around at the architecture that is in our everyday life. I agree with Perec's the infraordaniary in that sense. The Sagrada Familia, the mom and pop restaurant down the road, and one's childhood home is all architecture. We often take the smaller projects for granted like residential projects unless they are designed by big name architects or a mansions. There is one really weird house that I grew up by in Inman, SC for example. Its this really weird interesting house that everyone always thought was super ugly and for good reason, but I loved it in a weird way because it was architecture that caught my eye as a kid in a town with architecture that almost all looked the same.

I agree 100%. I have to remind myself a lot of times that my view of architecture is not and should not be the same as someone else and that viewpoint is valid. I try not to get caught up in the chaos of ArchDaily and remind myself that architecture and the success of it is in the eye of the beholder. We should be proud to design, whether it’s on a large scale or not!
ReplyDeleteI agree that not all architecture can be amazing. We have to look for the opportunities present and find the best design solution possible within constraints and the budget.
ReplyDeletei agree with you Rachel, We do not always have to produce starchitect work. Sometime it can be those community project that really make a difference within the the work that we do.
