Does Space affect human life?
Thinking about how space affects human life is like one of those big existential questions. In class we talked about several ways that it does and one that interested me the most was the example in Medellin, Colombia where they made a way for travel into the city to be accessible to everyone. The cable car created the opportunity for transportation that the lower-class people needed to get into the city but had the accidental effect of creating informal meeting spaces where each stop was. This was an example where space became a social product. This transportation method created spaces at each hub that were functional and also conducive to social interactions and community engagement, so it was a much bigger success than it was designed for. As designers, we try to consider the impact that we could have on the local communities when creating new structures or renovating existing ones but sometimes the communities take a space and make it what they really need.
