Ariadne's Thread of Architecture

Theseus and Ariadne at the Entrance of the Labyrinth by Richard Westall

“But it is to argue that our aesthetic and technical twiddlings - whilst the world burns - are accorded a reverence and association with resistance, that they simply do not deserve.” (Till, 16)

How do we create a scaled network of humanization? There no longer is just at a micro-scale of experience. Instead, there is a delicate balance of unrealistic “extremes” in the role of architecture serving society. Simplified, this is Ariadne’s thread in architecture. Frampton’s phenomenology of the Six Thoughts of Architecture in Resistance establishes architecture’s role as a commodity to society through a series of extremes. Till's juxtaposition expresses that there is no black or white view but instead a need to blend and distill this liquidity of thought that the true depths of the need for architectural commentaries to move the profession forward.

Critical thought has routinely been a driving force in my posts within recent weeks. This week is no different. Till expresses the need for a critical eye to recognize the rigidity placed by Till and other architectural critics about the driving forces of architecture in society. That is where the role of the individual architect comes into play. The individual has the tools necessary to recognize these extremes of scale and idealisms and balance such with the networking of commodities. I commented last week about my realistic views in architecture, compared to how many have a romantic idea. The perverse terminology Till uses to express the wakening of an architect in the realities of the “dirty reality” proves that maybe this is a way to move forward in the decision and thought.
