Community Investment
I found Mockbee’s work interesting because we don’t see good design with tight budgets often enough in architecture school. It’s strange to think that lawyers have a greater sense of community wellness by working for non profits or offering up their services for free or cheap than architects. Sure, a part of that may be the effects of subsidies and tax exemptions, but architecture is extremely important to a community’s survival. Think of all the recreation centers and community hubs that bring people together, encourage their education, provide social services, etc. that turn people’s life around and creates a more empathetic and skilled population of people. People should invest more in their communities if they truly care about their communities and that starts with each individual. Having an incentive for skilled firms to take up projects that pay peanuts would be huge for everyone from our kids to our grandparents.
