billboard house or dumpster house

‘Self building is illegal in Spain so any architect taking on the project, assumes all liabilities.’
This problem requires different methods of construction and knowledge than typically expected from a housing project. The area that architect Santi Cirugeda is ‘illegally’ working in has been continuously neglected by the state, so to work there almost serves as a direct call to action for government officials.
The coolest part about the whole thing is that people in the community were willing to be a part of the experiment. They all have a genuine interest in seeing the end of the project in order to enjoy the residual community space.
Santi is not the only one known for ‘hacking’ public property in the name of social awareness. The idea of transforming and reclaiming public space into functional architecture is mainly to bring awareness and responsibility to urban housing design. To address the challenges of the growing affordable housing demands, we need more out of the box thinking. People have transformed billboards, and dumpsters to meet their housing needs.
Adrianna, these structures are definitely interesting and are great at breaking the mold. I do love the idea of calling the government to action to address the housing needs of the community, but I am curious of how successful the attempt was in getting the government to do anything. Does this form of architecture lead to true change? Ideally, people shouldn't have to create living spaces out of anything that wasn't intended to function in such a way.
