"Architects should always be in the initial critical decision-making position in order to challenge the power of the status-quo." -Samuel Mockbee
After reading "Rural Studio" by Samuel Mockbee, one idea stuck out to me the most. He says, "...the more we practice, the more restricted we become in our critical thinking and our lifestyles," which made me think about how, as architects, we should always be evolving, finding new technologies and inspirations, and always making sure that all that we do is for the betterment of society. This notion made me think that the more we are subjugated to local and federal codes, building requirements for projects, and sometimes designing buildings within the same sector, i.e., education, the more we lean back on tried and true forms of construction. It should be our responsibility to make sure that we aren't generating buildings that are carbon copies to the ones we've seen or designed before. Rather, we should focus on bettering society and our designs per project/user.
