Designing through section
I feel that drafting + modeling in section can present us with
solutions dealings with environment, health, experience and much more. The
interior experience to me matters more than purely designing for the façade. Section
helps greatly with spatial relationships, zenith light entry, ventilation,
solid / void etc… It can reveal program flow and nodes of social interaction
while bringing forth poor preliminary designed spaces. An awesome and intriguing
thought on this style of design is that nobody will see the final constructed
project through that lens. Originally section was used as an “analytical device”
and has now evolved into a design tool and “generative instrument”. What a
special process and connection to future user groups.
(Shout out to Harrison Polk, check out his resume some time. Over the years he has created some spectacular projects through section.)
Design through section is almost necessary these days, especially in the context of a densely populated city. To understand how the building relates vertically to its neighbors, the interior-exterior relationships and layering of the facade could debatebly be what makes or breaks a building.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to agree with you on designing the interior experience, I think that the façade plays a great role in determining the atmosphere of a place. I would argue and say that most people remember the moments that occur in an intimate space which includes the façade as a facilitator of how it that space is experienced rather than the experience of the façade as a single entity of spatial engagement.
ReplyDeleteLove the post. Because love the section drawing. From all the architecture drawings, my favorite one is the section. The plan only shows the building layout and only have 2d info. The rendering is more colored and it only shows one place of the building. But the section has 3d info and it shows the whole space of the building. At the same time, we can also see the space connection from the section.
