Shred the Gnar

The project Franco showed in class made me think of a very similar project by BIG, the Amager Bakke Waste-to-Energy Plant. This project goes along with the idea of merging science fiction with reality. Combining architecture with a power plant. The project does not just hide away all the heavy, ugly machinery, but brings it to light and makes design out of it. The power plant is a waste to energy plant that will be such a clean process, BIG even made the smoke stack a design element. The smoke will blow out in rings, showing how much emissions is coming from the plant. But the ultimate design element, in my opinion, is the idea of taking a public utility building and turning it into an ski slope. The roof of the plant slopes to provide different levels of skiing in a climate that has snow, but no mountains. Not only are there ski slopes, but hiking trails and climbing walls for the warmer months. BIG truly attempted to make an attraction out of a building type that is typically a challenge to hide from the public. That’s pretty gnarly.
