Air Conditioner Conditions People
It was not until post WWII, the average American households started adopting central air conditioning packages in their homes and it was not the kind that you stick in the window and it has become a standard in new buildings ever since.
As the AC brings us a controlled environment, I wonder if there are some negative effects that it has on the human body. Here are just a few things that might affect one’s health. (Found these over the internet)
Dry Eyes
Dehydration
Headache
Infections
Respiratory Problems
Dry Skin
Lethargy
Asthma and Allergies
I did not grow up with a conditioned air, (we had mini split units, but my folks were too cheap to run it all time)I definitely remember getting too hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. To be quite honest, I don’t know if I can quite go back to that kind of living situation, but most of the people on this planet still don’t have access to a 24 7 air conditioning and I wonder how much more energy is needed if everyone on this planet is using conditioned air in their house.
I remember during one of Vincent’ class that he points out the importance of having a filtered, conditioned indoor air environment when the outdoor air quality is not good, which I have also experienced somewhat when I was growing up, but without the conditioned indoor air, the only thing is that I learned to adopt the not so great outdoor air.
As we have enveloped ourselves with conditioned air on the inside, our body has probably changed in an irreversible way, what would be the future of air conditioning, I wonder? More sophisticated equipment? Or can we design in a way that can change the human body with its ability to adapt to the environment?
This honestly makes me think of the few moves I've made to different climates. I grew up in the NYC and New Jersey so I'm used to a somewhat colder climate, but then I moved up to Vermont for College. Back then if it was over 32 Fahrenheit everyone was in shorts and a T-shirt. But since we moved here our body cannot deal with the cold like we used to. It was 72 Degrees the other day and my girlfriend put pants and a jacket. I think the body has a greater ability to adapt than we give it credit for. Its easy to get used to something and feel like we can't live without it but once its gone you get just as comfortable in the new situation.
