More Green : More Green
Woodlands Neighborhood in Texas sets unattainable standards for our generation. As building market prices continue to skyrocket due to the current state of our world, we are having to move increasingly toward a model of cheap fast builds that are getting closer and closer together. The problem in addition to this is that land continually increases in price and as such, it creates a situation where the more acreage per plot that a developer has, the more that plot will cost at an exponential rate. As a way to combat the initial building costs, many developers will also sell the lumber and any extra dirt they can from the clearing and grating of the land. With this being said, it is also getting more difficult to convince them to do otherwise. Basically, what I’m saying is that the bottom line will always be money. This puts us as architects in a position where we need to find ways to create the kind of atmosphere and environment of Woodlands without necessarily having the space or finances to do so.
I agree Zach! But I think that in the end the bottom line will always be money even at the architect's level (at least for now while we work under the current capitalist model). We as architects need to come together as an entire profession to oppose status quo in order to change how society views the built environment
