Facade VS Clothes
“The power of architecture is not just iconographic but also organizational.”
“The facade of a building functions not only on a purely biological level. It assembles the building’s interior, which it protects, and external public realm with which it communicates.” (double existence)
The Politics of the Envelope, A Political Critique of Materialism
Alejandro Zaera Polo
The facade as part of people is similar to the clothes as part of the people. Clothes help people look beautiful and show their personality and style, to some extent, other people can know each other more from the clothes style. In addition, they act as a sanctuary to each individual, maintaining a constant temperature and comfort for the human body.
What aspects should we consider when we design an envelope?
Facades can be a tool to please the exterior environment and the people around it from an aesthetic aspect. However, it can also be a comfort regulator for the interior of the building. After all, the architecture serves users. Both of these two aspects are important. Combining these two sides is the key to good design as well.
Great post Xin,
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with the concept of facades depending on my mood. On one end facades show time and place. The materials they use can be better or worse for the environment and so can the form. On the other hand I struggle with considering architecture as an object, I think the experience is more important than how it looks. However what you're saying is how it looks it a part of the experience. I think there is a good middle ground with façade work. For the most part I think people can intuitively tell when its done right or wrong.
