I think therefor I must consider the impact of the ecological paradigm
Mostafavi outlines
Guattari’s concept of “ecological urbanism” as an argument for how we should
respond to the environmental crisis. Architects have an enormous amount of
responsibility to the planet considering buildings and construction are the
main contributors to carbon emissions. I love the quote, “In place of the
Cartesian subject, whose being is solely defined by its thinking, Guattari has ‘componenets
of subjectification’ who engage with real ‘territories of existence,’ that is,
with the everyday domains nof their lives and actions.” (20) Being conscious of
dwindling resources is not enough anymore. There has to be a fundamental
reframing of the way we as a society desing in light of the climate crisis. The
issue becomes much broader because it is no longer presented as a problem with
a solution. Incorporating the environment into the design process will be a
constant and ever-changing set of standards and principles that will—hopefully—benefit
the earth as well as society.
The notion that the environment and its problems are seen as a problem without a solution is very true. There are so many people in the world that it is almost impossible to think of a solution that everyone can get behind. The changes that we must make in order to save the environment is something that will broach every facet of the planet, architecture included.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Emma,
ReplyDeleteThe complexity of the environment, the transaction of plants with the soil and its minerals are so far beyond my understanding. its becomes this mountain like topic to breach because of the strong disagreements and the overall lack of knowledge. The only thing I can regurgitate is what I read from sources that I don't think would act as good citation material. It goes into the idea of Meteorological Design with Phillippe Rahme. The amount of time and energy still needed for these subjects are immense.
