Where do we start?

“It also implies a battle of competences between what was historically the “solo voice” of the architect and the increasingly noisy “chorus” of experts, encouraged by companies and manufactures of environmental technology.”

- Iñanki Abalos

When discussing sustainability, it is very common for architects to list out all of the amazing things they can do in their design for sustainable strategy. However, it is usually all talk and not enough action. We can give a million reasons why we should make a building sustainable and economical, but the biggest question is, where do we start? As architects coming out of school we should be provided these tools to start a conversation. Not only when it comes to sustainable strategy, but also social justice. It is very important that we put these topics in the forefront of our designs moving forward.

  1. Molly,

That is true, and we need to consider how to put these sustainable strategies into practice to move forward instead of just thinking of one hundred ideas and keep talking but having no action to make it happen. Sustainability is a discipline including so many different aspects of knowledge. No matter where we start, as long as we take a step forward, we will contribute our part to the whole exploration process.

  2. This coincides great with the idea of "greenwashing." As designers, we tend to overcompensate by adding way too many trees and plants to make up for the fact our buildings are not properly energy efficient like they could be. We need to learn to consider the context and conditions of our sites to properly irrigate the land to receive and effectively have a thriving, eco-friendly build.
