Architecture and Urbanism
Practical or Aesthetics, which one is more valuable?
Postmodern architecture is characterized by the symbolic or decorative nature of decorative objects, which enhances the beauty of the artistic conception in the post-modernist architecture, improves the surrounding environment and development atmosphere of post-modernist architecture, and enhances the artistic conception of architecture. Modernism architecture emphasizes simplicity and harmony, focusing on the exquisiteness of space, emphasizes function and make rational design according to the requirements of the practical function.
Modernism combines architectural design with the material conditions of society, arguing that architects are concerned with social issues. On the contrary, postmodernists are mainly concerned with decoration, symbolism, metaphorical traditions and history, while neglecting many practical problems.
Should we design something that is mediocre to solve society practical needs, but lack of aesthetics or something that is extraordinary to solve architects’ aesthetic needs but lack of practical aspect? Beside combining both characteristics to solve the needs of both society and architect. Which one is actually more valuable or suitable for the city?
