Transition and Consistency
As noted in the lecture, one of the failings of both modernism and post-modernism is a failing to relate the external facade with the internal program. In the case of post-modernism, there is the additional circumstance of varied programs congesting within one building with nothing to mediate them save the floor planes which divide them, as exemplified by the Downtown Athletic Club. In such cases the singular relationship shared by each program is the means by which they are accessed, the elevators. In addition to being the technological marvel which made large story buildings feasible to all users, elevators have also take on the equally critical role of transitional space. In both a physical and metaphorical sense, the elevator transitions users from one program to the next. Furthermore, in a building full of change, the elevator is a constant; constant of space, constant of atmosphere, and constant of location. Would it not then be apt to suppose it is the elevator which remains stationary, and the building which moves around it?
This is a spectacular discovery, that the elevator offers the only constant within the continuous change within a culture of congestion.
ReplyDeleteGood idea! Maybe we could do something to the elevator and make it very Postmodernism, a good place to interact.
ReplyDeleteBy directing the movements and pauses, we then become the choreographers of built space, the conductor guiding the orchestra of human performance.
ReplyDelete(mind = blown with your ending statement: movement exists only in relation to other objects)

ReplyDeleteThis is a great opinion! But it may be no more correct in a very soon future. The top one elevator manufacturer - Schindler - is now testing the first horizontally transiting elevator and expecting it will be ready to be brought to global market in recent 2 years.
