Junkspace
At the end of the Junkspace essay by Rem Koolhaas, I was confused about the lack in clarity of what junkspace really is. I believe this is the point made by Koolhaas using this style of writing to describe something that is everywhere. There is a moment in the writing where he says: " junkspace thrives on design, but design dies in junkspace." To me this means junkspace is growing continuously as architecture is constructed, and the design of the architecture becomes junkspace. Taking this thought further, Koolhaas also brings up a point that "our culture has abandoned repetition and regularity of design as repressive," but at the same time materials have become more standardized and modularized. Just these few points makes it seem as if we are at a loss and junkspace will always exist one way or another. It's time we either welcome the idea of junkspace in design or completely try to design around it.
(I was also confused about how junkspace is actually defined) But yes, it does seem like an inevitable outcome that is not only limited to architecture but almost all creative fields. It terms of modularity, I think junkspace is welcomed in that sense since it promotes a more sustainable method of construction.
ReplyDeleteIt's also interesting to think of junk space or junk design in other products than architecture. I wonder for all other mass produced products (like an iphone), how does the design validate itself not as junk?
