The future of commercial spaces
Thinking about what junk spaces are considered and the future could be scary or concerning, but architects have always had challenges, and this is just another one. Commercial spaces at the begging were located in the heart of the cities, and people had to meander around to find what they needed. With the invention of malls, there was a change in the way of shopping, and it turned into something more convenient where all you needed could be found in one place. I think one significant factor of this places to be considered junk spaces is the way they are denying the context and focusing only on the inside. Then as architects, we have to think about the future and needs. Currently, the commercial experience has a high percentage happening online, so should we be thinking about this change as architects? Even if in the future these structures do not completely disappear, then I think we should provide spaces that still are convenient but give something to the city and its context.
I agree that the future of these commercial buildings should be thought of. I have seen many, almost empty, malls in the midwest that are just sitting taking up large amounts of space. There needs to be some thoughts on what these large empty spaces could become.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the future of commercialization is changing as shopping is turning online through the ease of companies dominating the market like Amazon. Architects, Urban Planners and Developers will need to get creative to offer more than shopping provided in the commercial experience to draw in consumers.
