Free Section and Congestion Culture
By the Downtown Athletic Club, from the section, we can see there is a gym, coffee, swimming pool and office. The form of the architecture is not controlled by content. The architects don’t need to consider the content when designing the form. In this case, Koolhaas found the principle of the free section and this principle become his inspire of his design. If Corbusier told us to think as a free plan way. We can say that Koolhaas bring the free section to the architecture culture. He helped people to think about the architecture in vertical as he proved that the density of the metropolis. Free section is kind of a manifestation of congestion culture. Although the form of architecture is not defined by section, the architecture is considered by section. This way of thinking is to explore the scale in the architecture and then find the form of architecture. It’s a new evaluation of the drawings for the architecture.
Huge buildings are "overcrowded" into a wide variety of potentially totally different parts in order to achieve a mixed and pluralistic purpose. In such a building, people may not be needing to take many places as before and can meet many needs. It sounds a bit like the very popular complex in China right now
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the skyscraper inspired Koolhaas to think and design in section- realizing that the building could be a shell for diverse programs. The idea of a free section- that any floor can be whatever it wants to be regardless of the floors surrounding it work best in high-rise buildings. Koolhaas did a great service to architecture by emphasizing the section!
