Time May Change Me
“Change goes hand in hand with permanence. Houses may come
and go, for instance, but the street remains.”
This quote makes me think of sustainability in the sense
that the definition of sustainable is not necessarily how long it will last.
Sustainability can be using materials that are easily disassembled in the
future when you know the function of the building will alter over time.
Sustainability can be designing a flexible space that one day may participate
in adaptive reuse. Things are constantly changing, and it is unrealistic to
think that our buildings should last forever. Once architects let go of that
mindset and realize that change is inevitable, we can design sustainable
buildings that invite change.
This is a great post regarding sustainability. I think understanding it fully and knowing how to design a building with it in mind will help us achieve a fully adaptable and permanent building. But of course, I agree with your statement about how it is unrealistic to think buildings last forever, we just need to design them to wear they can last long enough.
