Ecstasy About Architecture
As
technology expanded and grew our understanding about architecture, so did the
ideas and execution of thought. In my opinion, the Downtown Athletic Club is a
prime example of “getting too big for your breeches.” The relationship between
the urban grid, elevator, and skyscraper exacerbated the programmatic
experiences one has in a building by stacking and mixing program elements. The
building goes above and beyond the understandable components of architecture and
is too ambitious and congested with program overlaps to be valued and
appreciated appropriately. I believe architecture like the Downtown Athletic Club
went too far with technology and created a flawed sense of ecstasy about
architecture.
