How far is too far?

Technology has been revolutionary for Architecture. It’s weird for me to think of a time where neon wasn’t a prevalent part of the regular nightlife. When Luna Park at Coney Island installed lights and opened to the public in the evenings it was innovative, but then, when they went and strung lights next to the beach so that people could bathe in the evenings it was huge. They called it the “electric bath” and it symbolized a big shift for society. They said that “synthetic was irresistible” and it really showed how magnetic technological innovations became for society and still are today. I don’t think we would be where we are in terms of construction systems and materials if it weren’t for technology but maybe there should be a limit? Maybe we shouldn’t bathe next to an electrically charged light.

  1. Yarely, I found your viewpoint very interesting. I think throughout history, technological advancement has always been a delicate dance between innovation and boundaries. Without one, the other would cease to be of use. We must find the balance of innovating but temper it with certain boundaries as well.
