you wish you were in Rem's cool house
Rem Koolhaas popularized the concept of simple forms with complex and dynamic programs. This concept is evident in his early studies of New York and Coney Island it is also exemplified in OMA's project Maison Bordeaux. Maison Bordeaux is a house design in the 1990s that follows the structure of simple exterior form yet interesting overlapping interior spaces. Conceptually this house is three houses stacked on top of each other, but on the inside, there is interesting mixing of spaces. I think that this concept is one of the strongest modern architectural theories. Unlike some of my peers, I feel that this architecture is truly user and experienced based. By focusing on creating interesting and compelling user dynamics it prioritizes the human experience. In contrast architect Peter Eisenman, who values geometry more than people.
KJ,
ReplyDeleteI agree that even though there is not a prescription or always clear understanding of Rem's architecture because of his rejection of prescribed forms and programs it is the ambiguity and flexibility of the spaces that he creates that create a unique user experience. The user is able to utilize varying spaces for different programs and the spaces are given back to the user.
KJ,
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is a lot of value in Rem Koolhaas' method. By creating spaces with complex and mixed programs, it creates spaces that could potentially be used in many ways and therefore give the building more longevity overall. In this case, prioritizing the human experience can also benefit the architecture in the long run.
