The Basement
So basically growing up, I was
involved in this Asian cult. (Don’t worry David it was a totally legit “Youth
Organization”). Anyways, the weekly activities would essentially be held at
your local Vietnamese Catholic Church. And below the church is the basement,
where everyone went after service to buy food and eat, or just talk and gossip.
So this basement space was
nothing special. Just a large rectangular room with a bunch of old tables and
chairs etc. Oh and there’s a stage. (foreshadowing)
While the room itself was
simple, we held a lot of different events there. The basement was where we
celebrated (Vietnamese) New Years, and the Lunar Moon Festival, or where we
would practice for the May Crowning Festival. And strangely enough, when I
think back about this period of my life, a lot of my memories take place in
this basement. And while the space is essentially just a large room, it became
so much more because of the people and the events that took place here.
(Thought about posting a video, but didn't want to scare anyone)
Sad you are not personally in any of these photos. But I do agree that sometimes architecture does not always need to be big and fancy and elaborately well-thought out, a simple rectangular room still allowed you to create lifelong memories.
ReplyDeleteThe spaces in-between, or in this case under (basement), most often are the ones we remember - not because of their awesome aesthetics, but because of the activities that take place in these spaces. The places where our family and/or friends always came together tie our emotions into the space - and we will always hold a soft-spot in our hearts for it - for me, it was my Aunt and Uncle's back porch :)
