Architects VS architectural students

Student design and work projects, I think, are very different. Most of the projects in work are designed for the clients. It might seem not very optimistic to many people, but it is the truth. Because excellent or influential architects are only a few. For most architects, the role is to serve the client to fulfill clients' requirements, even some of them are unreasonable. Our choice is either compromised because of some limitations or lost opportunities.

Personally, the design of Architectural students can be different from architects at work. As architectural students, we want to study how to think and design something beneficial for the user group rather than the limited budget, based on some research. For example, one coast guard client proposed that the landscape maintenance fee is only 2dollar per square foot. Are we going to comply fully? For students who have no practical experience, everyone is not very sensitive to the budget. Do we want to design "nothing" for the studio project to achieve the 2dollar per square foot budget for the maintenance fee? Work projects, we have to consider, but student works, I insist on ignoring this kind of requirement.

Part of the reason for being a student again after working for a while is that I am trying to break the limitation from clients to think and study the design that I really feel is important, meaningful, and improve the user experience.

  1. There is a two-dollar taco truck that I love in GVl, maybe we can propose a Taco Thursday as a fund raising event to get to 10 dollar per square.

  2. Xin, I completely agree that school can be a perfect place for letting creativity shine. Especially after working, you understand what it means to be in the field. This provides a unique perspective, but also allows you to study things that you wouldn't normally do at work! Great post!

  3. Xin, I like what you had to say. As students, we are put in a place of imagination and so our role is to push past what is commonly thought as possible. We are put in a place to challenge conventions and status quo.
