City without People
It has been about two days since our school does not require masks any longer and days of “Covid Era” seem already in the past.
I remember discussing with a friend whether people will forget about the pandemic. He thinks that the society has developed unprecedented incidents with pandemic and internet and they intermingled in a way that is hard to untie the jumble that were created by us, so no I guess. I disagreed. Because people are intrinsically forgetful. (It is really hard to spell things these days)
History only matters when people start forgetting things.
To demolish a place is to wipe out memories of a generation, stories about love and growth, a way of life. What if it is the opposite? The people are locked inside, while the cities
are still here? Does the city lose its memory? Does the city celebrate its vacation? Or is it indifferent to what is happening?

Cities are created by us, for us,
but are we changed by the cities we create?

Study the field
it will be there without you
but you can contribute to it
Study the field as a living organism
It has no form, but it has structure
Find its structure and form will come
The field has continuity
merge with it
and others will join you
Because the field has continuity
no job is large or small
all you do is adding to the field
Nobody builds alone:
When you do something large
leave the small to others
When you do something small
enhance the large
Respond to those before you:
When you find structure
inhabit it
when you find type
play with it
when you find patterns
seek to continue them
Be hospitable to those after you:
give structure
as well as form
The more you seek to continue
what was done by others already
the more you will be recognized for it
the more others will continue what you did
Cooperate;
When you can borrow from others
borrow, and praise them for it
When you can steal from others
steal, and admit it freely
No matter what you do
your work will be your own
Avoid style: leave it to the critics and historians
Choose method: it is what you share with your peers
Forget self expression
It is a delusion
Whatever you do
will be recognized by others as your expression
don't give it a thought
Do what the field needs
Zach, you always pose interesting question. I agree with you that we are forgetful. People still packed the Time Square to celebrate the New Year Eve of 2022. I wouldn't go to the extreme and say we will forget what happen. But the impact COVID have on people will diminish over time. Once there are medicine to cure COVID, it becomes like how we regard common cold. Looking at the pattern how COVID surges came in waves, I feel like as a society we would learn to adapt to wear mask and protect ourselves more when cases increase, and forget to be more relax and no mask when the number is down - like our University not requiring masks now. So cities in the same way would adapt to a sea of people or emptiness depending on what is happening. My question would be: Would and how architecture change if this "new normal" of adapting were to be our reality of the future?
