Wanna work on studio in the bathroom?

 Flexible versus Permanent…

The student-led discussion this week really made me think about the types of spaces I wanted to interact with as a user and not just as the one that designs them. It made me question the good and bad of both flexible spaces and permanent spaces and the conclusion that I have come to is that both are important in the future of architecture.

John Habraken states “Change goes hand in hand with permanence. Houses may come and go, but the street remains."

In my mind, flexibility creates chaos in a way that I appreciate when I feel in control. I want to encounter a flexible space when I want to feel chaotic or when I want to not be in control of what I do while in a space. The “common room” in my apartment is a space that changes every time I use it. I can do work there, I play board games there, I watch TV.

Permanent spaces are functional and controlled. For example, my closet. When I walk into my closet, I don't want to change my use each time. I want it to be organized so that I can easily pick out matching clothes to wear and for convenience of knowing where everything is when I need it, especially in the morning when I am half asleep.
