The Built Environment as an Organism
In Habraken’s excerpt from The Structure of the Ordinary, he compares our built environment to an organism rather than an artifact. The ordinary spaces that we inhabit are constantly changing, being demolished, being rebuilt, and being reinterpreted. Some architects are passionate about taking a snapshot of a building in its current state, yet in the attempt to preserve the architecture, time still plays its role in the deterioration of building materials. I think that it is important to keep in mind that the buildings we are designing and constructing are not intended to be permanent; many buildings are demolished or repurposed long before the end of their lifecycle. When we design, we need to take into account how materials will age, how social settings will evolve, and how new technologies will fit into the fabric of the buildings we construct.
