With the advancement of today’s technology, the process behind the way that buildings are designed has completely changed from conventional times, and it has created a negative effect on sustainability. Vernacular architecture took into account the conditions and climate of an area. These were the main driving factors in the built environment at the time, and people became skilled at building structures that were well crafted to withstand the elements of the local environment so that they would last. Nowadays, technology continues to advance daily causing people to continually have higher expectations for something new. This demand for innovation and bigger and better products means mass production never stops, which requires a large number of raw materials and emissions of production. Resource depletion due to new technology is causing resources to be used quicker than they can be replenished. So, although it may seem as if we are becoming more sustainable with the latest green technology such as automated systems and PV panels, in reality, we’re merely reallocating our ecological footprint.

  1. Great post Gauge. I'm glad you pointed out the depletion of resources in the making of efficient and sustainable sources. We often forget the process when all we see is the flashy number or fact that makes us feel like we are actually making a change when in fact, we are just ignoring the real problem.
